The Magician Tarot Card Description

Following on from The Fool, where nothing has yet been manifested, The Magician has everything he needs to manifest his wishes into reality. He stands with one hand holding a magic wand and raised towards the heavens, the other hand pointed to the earth. He is channelling the forces of the universe, converting energy into matter, to manifest his dreams into reality. Like a lightning rod, he draws energy from above to below.

On the table before him there is a wand, cup, sword and pentacle – the symbols of the four tarot suits, representing the elements fire, water, air and earth respectively. The Magician has mastered the skills needed to use these tools effectively. Compare this to The Fool, who also has everything he needs, but doesn’t yet know how to use them. The flowers blooming in the foreground represent his wishes blossoming into reality.

The Magician wears a white robe, symbolizing purity. This is cinched at the waist by an ouroboros, or snake, eating its own tail. The ouroboros is an ancient symbol, the first known representation of which comes from Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus. It represents the endless cycle of birth and death. The infinity symbol, or lemniscate, is visible above the Magician’s head. Both the ouroboros and the lemniscate represent the unlimited possibilities and potential available to the Magician.

The Magician’s red cloak symbolizes passion, earthly knowledge, fire, energy, strength, power, etc. He wears a white headband – symbolic of the discipline and concentration needed to manifest.

The Magician Reversed Tarot Card Meanings

The Magician Reversed Keywords: Destruction, Manipulation, Untapped Potential

What The Magician Reversed Means in a Tarot Reading

The Magician Reversed can indicate that you’re using your power to destroy. This can have the negative meaning that immediately comes to mind, but destruction can also be a positive force. We need to destroy in order to create. Destruction of the status quo, revolution, and change all bring about positive, progressive outcomes.

There’s a focus on self-power and self-fulfilment. You may be acting selfishly, without regard for the needs or feelings of others. It’s likely that you’re narrowly focused on the material world and neglecting the spiritual. The Magician Reversed is calling your awareness to this so that you can correct any imbalance.

Manipulation is a strong theme with The Magician Reversed. You may be manipulating appearances to further your own agenda or manipulating the physical world without considering the consequences. When you see this card in a reading, it’s a good idea to take some time to consider your motives and to reflect on the possible consequences of your actions before you proceed with your plans.

There’s also a sense with The Magician Reversed that you might not be tapping into your skills and talents. You’re trying to achieve your goals, but you’re not maximizing the resources available to you. Better use of your resources will help you to achieve more.

The Magician Reversed Love and Relationships Tarot Meanings

If you’re involved with someone at this time, it’s likely to be a destructive relationship. You’re tearing each other down; acting in ways that harm yourselves, each other, and the relationship. This can’t continue for long without impacting on your emotional and mental wellbeing. Now is probably the best time to take stock, consider your actions, consider your future in this relationship, and make the choices and decisions that will bring positive change. It’s far from certain that an end to the relationship is necessary, but now is the best time to make changes that will ensure the relationship is more mutually supportive and fulfilling in the future.

If you’re looking for love, you’re likely to benefit from being more open, more positive, and less focused on yourself and your own narrow self-interest. The energy surrounding you at the moment isn’t likely to attract people to you. Think about opening yourself up to possibilities. Focus your powerful, creative energy outward and you’ll attract the right people to you.

The Magician Reversed Career Tarot Meanings

Your career is going well, but you’re far from working to your full potential. If you can learn to maximize your skills and talents, you’ll be amazed at how successful you can be.

Perhaps you feel you’re prevented from using your talents in your workplace for some reason. Maybe your job isn’t a great fit for you. If this is the case, it’ll be worth it for you to explore how you might be able to introduce more of your expertise and talents to your role. Small steps in this direction will lead to big gains.

You might ultimately find that this job isn’t a great fit for you. There’s no need to make any rushed decisions, but this is a good time for you to become more self-aware.
