Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Description

Key 10 depicts the Wheel of Fortune in the heavens. The words ‘TARO’, or ‘TORA’ if read counter clockwise, or even ‘ROTA’, and also the Hebrew letters ‘YHWH’ are written in the outer wheel. ‘TARO’ is self-explanatory. ‘TORA’ may represent the word Torah which is the law of God revealed to Moses in Judaism. ‘ROTA’ is the Latin for wheel. The letters ‘YHWH’ represent Yahweh – one of the Hebrew names for God in the Bible. In the middle circle, reading clockwise from the top, we see the alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, water and salt. We see a dharma wheel at the centre.

Around the edge of the wheel we see a sphinx holding a sword, a yellow serpent, and Anubis, the jackal-headed Egyptian god of the dead. At the four corners of the card we see four winged creatures, each holding a book. Each creature represents a fixed sign of the zodiac: the man or angel is Aquarius, the eagle is Scorpio, the lion is Leo and the bull is Taurus. The pages of the books are blank – our destinies aren’t written down and fixed.

What The Wheel of Fortune Means In A Tarot Reading

The Wheel of Fortune appears when we’re at a turning point in our lives. Upright, the wheel indicates a period of good luck. Things will go your way. Higher forces are at play and you will be surprised at how events unfold. The wheel has turned and you’ll feel it as a turning point in your life. It will come as a surprise. This is a time of good fortune for you and you’ll feel changes in the energy surrounding you.

You may also have a clearer sense of your destiny. Our futures aren’t written down – as represented in the blank pages of the books held by the four creatures in the corners of the card – but, nonetheless, you’ll be more aware of patterns and events that have led you to this point and you’ll sense their significance in your life as it moves forward.

The wheel can also represent cycles in our lives. It reminds us of the cycle of death and rebirth. You may have a sense of déjà vu, of history repeating itself, as the wheel turns.
